FOLK ART: Incredible find from the attic!! Pair of early primitive portraits, oil on canvas (31" x 37"), of "William Lyman aged 47" and "Polly Lyman aged 46" in original wooden frames signed and dated 1839 by folk artist A.P. Ball. These two large portraits of a prominent Western Reserve couple, born in the 1790s, may very well be the find of the century for discriminating collectors of early 19th century folk art. Definitely museum-quality pieces, this matched pair of portraits was in the attic of the home when the Scott family purchased it in 1943 and has been housed there, untouched, for at least six decades. The portraits are masterful examples of a talented portrait artist with exceptionally well preserved color. William Lyman and two partners purchased a tract of Western Reserve Land for $24,730 from the Connecticut Land Company according to "A 20th Century History of Trumbull County, Ohio, Vol 1" by Harriet Taylor Upton of Warren (Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago 1909) pages 14-15. Polly Lyman is listed in "Index to Genealogical Data Relating to Women in the Western Reserve Before 1840" by the Genealogical Committee of Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, published 1976, pg 127. Investment quality art for those who treasure local history.
